Chapter Thirty

The next morning, Guro got up early. She had a dip in the pool and put on a light summer dress, and then she stepped into their normal morning routine. Marie had swapped out her comfortable everyday clothes for a pair of simple trousers with sharp creases and a lavender, short-sleeved shirt with a neatly ironed collar. She had blow-dried her hair, and light makeup gave her face extra colour. Guro looked her up and down before dog whistling at her.

“Yes, I can look like this, too,” Marie laughed. “When you’re expecting guests, it’s best to be prepared. You look lovely as well,” she said to Guro.

“I forgot to put on makeup, so I’d better go and put my face on after breakfast,” Guro laughed. “I can’t look like this now that you’re all dolled up!”

They sat down with their coffee and sandwiches. Marie had insisted she would keep making Guro’s food, making sure the portions were the right size. It had helped Guro a lot. She never felt very full anymore, but never very hungry, either. Sometimes, when she was on her own, things could still go wrong. Those evenings, she stayed in her flat by herself. Luckily, more and more time was passing between each incident. She always told Marie what had happened. It felt like a huge setback that she couldn’t stop completely. But Marie asked her to accept that this was how things were right now, and that she was still getting better every day.

Their conversations were good for her. Together, they were working their way through layer after layer. Guro knew they would soon arrive at things that were even harder to handle. Things that were even more painful. But she didn’t feel ready to tackle them yet. She had buried them so deeply to protect herself from them.

In addition to eating well with the help of Marie’s portion control, Guro also made sure she moved her body every day. Some days, she went jogging; other days, she just went for a walk. She felt better. And because she felt better, she ate less.
